This photo was taken August 9, 2005 in Mali. It was mango grafting workshop that I organized for local farmers. It was funded with SPA assistance. I contracted with the instructors (Mamadou Sissoko and Adama Coulibaly) to come to the village and present the workshop. In the photo Sissoko is in the center of the photo instructing the farmers (8 people attended, 6 men and 2 women); Coulibaly is to the far left of the photo. Grafted mangoes bring a better price in the market and the farmers were eager to learn the technique. During the workshop the grafting process was explained and demonstrated by the two instructors, then each participant practiced the technique with mango stems that the teachers brought. Each participant also left with several mango stems so that they could use the technique they learned on their own mango trees.
