My assignment is to help CONAFOR strengthen its environmental education and outreach, and I have focused my efforts on raising awareness of birds and habitat conservation. Birds are one of the easiest windows onto the natural world: they are lively and musical, come in all sizes and a riot of colors, and can be found almost anywhere you happen to be. But while birding is not expensive, it does require a few tools, and therein lies the Catch-22: without binoculars and field guides, it is hard to get anyone interested, and if no one is interested, it is impossible to find the equipment. I used SPA funds to acquire enough binoculars and Spanish language field guides to offer free field trips in the tree nursery. Today our group has a name (AvesEcoAgs), a website, and a monthly field trip to a new natural site. Everyone is welcome, and their smiles tell the story.
