Conectando con mi Entorno (Linking with my Surroundings) SPA Results Category. I took this photo on September 14, 2012 in the Vivero Forestal (state tree nursery) of CONAFOR, the Mexican Forest Service, in Mexico. The women are participating in a nature journaling course that I organized as part of a three-month-long celebration of birds and nature called "Los Otros Mexicanos" (The Other Mexicans). (The title refers to the other living things with which we share our world.) Nature journaling is a common, and popular, environmental education activity in the United States, but almost unknown here. The course met on successive weekends and involved a variety of activities including creative writing, painting and close observation of the natural world. One Saturday, we had a visiting artist from the American Society of Botanical Artists who shared her artwork and took the students outside to draw. Here she is showing the students the intricacy of a simple flower. I love the look of amazement on their faces.
