Namibia

This photo is original work of the Girls' Club of Uukwiyuushona Combined School, Namibia from 28 June 2012. Thirty female learners ages 14-20 collaborated ideas and were given a camera to capture them. As learners in grades either 9 or 10, they decided to focus on the theme of education in the contest. In this photo, the learners chose the theme reducing and eliminating stigma and discrimination. With limited resources in this rural, impoverished village in northern Namibia, the girls collected old red soda cans and created a red ribbon to symbolize acceptance and awareness of HIV/AIDS in this area. Then, they fastened it to the front gate of our school so all people passing can see our acceptance and non-discrimination efforts toward those infected with HIV and suffering from AIDS. Then, the learners reached for the sky with the sun as their goal to symbolize reaching for an AIDS Free generation in a bright, happy future, with a sky and a world clear from AIDS.
