Nicaragua

I took this photo on January 30th, 2012 at my Peace Corps site in Nicaragua. It was the second day of a two-day HIV workshop with at-risk youth and gang members funded by Peace Corps/PEPFAR VAST funds. The workshop was focused on HIV prevention and peer education, and at the end of two days the group sketched out ideas for a HIV prevention mural. We then painted the mural on a wall facing the Pan American Highway. The young man featured in the photo was an active participant in the workshop, and he jumped at the opportunity to paint the Peace Corps logo on the mural. The red HIV ribbon is covering gang tags that were previously on the wall. For me, the transformation of the graffiti into a positive message of prevention symbolized the transformative power of the workshop, harnessing the energy of the youth who attended and channeling it into something positive: the ability to educate their peers about a healthier future.
