In Georgia, where talking about HIV and AIDS is taboo, it can be difficult to raise awareness and spread accurate information about this important health issue. However, 14 high school students stepped up to the challenge in Akhaltsikhe as part of a peer education project conducted by Volunteers and local counterparts. Over the course of a month, these young leaders learned about HIV and AIDS from medical professionals and by using Peace Corps healthy lifestyles resources. They then created their own awareness campaign, which they executed on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2011. On this day, the students: - distributed over 500 red ribbons - created and wore T-shirts all day - used Facebook to reach their peers - gave presentations to over 200 people - participated in the local TV evening news talk show - held a rally in the town's central park.
