Palau

A defining moment for an educator and a student I took this photo during Educational Awareness Week at an elementary school in Palau in March 2009. My student was asked to present to the school how to make a specific fisherman's knot. In the beginning of the year he was one of my "problem students," always talking in class, struggling to complete his assignments, but through the course of the year, with a little guidance and patience, he really improved. This day he was really nervous and told me he couldn't speak in front of his class. He said he didn't know how to explain how to make the knot. We sat and I asked him to show me how it's done so that I could help him. He explained it so wonderfully to me one-on-one. I told him I would sit right in the front of the stage so when he got up he could look at me and tell me again, how he makes the knot. After a minute on stage he felt more comfortable and was able to make eye-contact with his fellow students. It was a really proud moment for me and it made me love teaching.
