Rwanda
I took this photo when my friend was visiting me in Rwanda after my first year of service. We were walking through the village on market day. It was during this rare occasion when another foreigner could help shoulder the constant attention that I finally had the courage to grab his camera and snap a few pictures. I like to think that the people in my village were comfortable enough with me to finally take pictures of them, but not comfortable enough to smile and pose in the way that I had been taught since birth. This natural expression of curiosity is more meaningful and beautiful than a fake smile could ever be.
