Talofa, this is a photo I shot the other day of our "Vailepa o Manunu" Community Development Fish Pond Project. This project will enable families to harvest locally grown fish, which will significantly boost the village nutrition. Unlike many villages in Western Samoa, Manunu is far into the mountains and has no access to the sea. We have partnered with the Ministry of Fishery in Samoa and they have provided us with a sustainable freshwater fish, Tilapia, to jumpstart our fish hatchery. The greatest part is that this fish hatchery is a pilot pond, and the community leaders are learning the ins and outs of constructing a fish pond. The village leaders want to implement more of these ponds at their own houses! Eventually, the Village Committee plans to use this pond as an income generator and sell these fish. The RPCV that funded this project is David Adams and started working with sustainable fishing many years ago as a Peace Corps volunteer in Jamaica. I am fascinated by the passion that he still keeps for sustainable fishing that began with his Peace Corps service in Jamaica and is now spreading from the Caribbean to the South Pacific. This partnership between current and return volunteer is something I am very lucky to be a part of as well as spreading the importance of sustainable fishing.
