Indonesia

Indonesia

I took this photo at Kawah Ijen, an active volcano about 2 hours away from my Peace Corps site in Indonesia. A handful of Indonesians and I were following this man down a trail into the crater. He is one of many men whose job is to make multiple trips into the crater each day and carry a basket-load of sulfur back out, down to the base of the mountain. It is a strenuous task, made worse by the fact that, near the crater, drafts of wind blow sulfur-laden fumes into the eyes, mouth and nose. Here, he is shielding his face from the fumes while carrying his empty basket down into the crater.
