Peru
In Andean towns in Peru, reading is a luxury; books are scarce, illiteracy is all too common, and reading for fun is an oxymoron. Promoting reading and critical thinking ended up being my primary project in site. I worked mostly with kids and loved to see their curiosity come alive as they flipped through a book or listened to a new story. This photo, taken in November of 2012 in our freshly painted library, captures that curiosity and reminds me how wonderful it felt to bring books into these children's lives and ignite their imaginations.
