South Africa

I took this photo on April 14, 2014 at a wedding reception in South Africa. The photo shows a grandmother and her granddaughter in colorful, traditional Tsonga dress and beadwork: the girl is wearing a child's version of the heavy, pleated skirt that local women wear when doing the Xibelani, a popular dance that involves quickly shaking your hips. The Tsonga are a minority cultural group in South Africa, mostly concentrated in the northeast corner of the country. Sometimes it seems like there is little room for traditional culture in rapidly modernizing South Africa. But many Tsonga people (women in particular) make a powerful effort to keep the culture of their grandparents alive and part of daily life.
