Madagascar
Rural women's basketball team travels to "the big city" As part of a PCPP grant, we built a basketball court and started a women's basketball team in my rural village in Madagascar. Before the PCPP, the community had never played basketball due to lack of a court and lack of education about the sport. The grant also included funding for the team to travel outside of the region to attend another PCVs basketball and community event. The majority of the team had never been outside of the region and some had never been further than our market town which is 12 km away! The team participated in basketball and community events meeting Malagasy men and women from a different ethnic group and getting exposure to a completely different way of life. In this photo, the team, along with myself (center in white), poses before their first game where we attended the basketball tournament and community event.
