Mozambique

This photo was taken on October 18th, 2010 at the 1st provincial REDES Conference in Inhambane, Mozambique. REDES, which stands for Raparigas em Desenvolvimento, Educação, e Saúde (or, Girls in Development, Education, and Health), is an organization started by a group of Volunteers in 2005 to promote the ability of Mozambican girls and women to build successful futures, giving them the knowledge to make healthy decisions and thus reducing their vulnerability to HIV & AIDS. Each year Volunteers in Mozambique work together to organize national and regional conferences, bringing together girls and women from around the country to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn about important topics such as gender, self-esteem, higher education, reproductive health and STIs. This is a photo of my counterpart leading an educational session on women's bodies and reproductive health. Educating young women about these topics is a very important part of preventing the spread of HIV to future generations.
