In 2006 Namibia's HIV/AIDS prevalence rate was close to 20% and rising. Massive efforts were made to increase knowledge and raise awareness of the virus. By 2007 a government survey found that 90% of Namibians had the necessary knowledge about HIV/AIDS, but determined that an educated person is not necessarily a behaviorally responsible one. To bridge the gap, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), to which I was assigned as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer, and Namibia's Ministry of Health and Social Services launched the "COOOL" Behavior program. Community leaders were identified, recruited and trained to be life-style ambassadors. They made house-to-house visits promoting HIV/AIDS prevention behavior through consistent condom use - within or outside of a relationship. I took the photo during a meeting with the UNFPA officials and the life-style ambassadors to assess the progress of the program. It was after lunch on a stifling hot day - nap time!
